Polymyositis is a type of inflammatory myopothy...it means "many muscle inflammation." It tends to become more evident in adulthood, and usually presents with bilateral proximal muscle weakness, most notably in the upper legs. It's associated with pathogens that cause Lyme Disease and toxoplasmosis. As previously mentione, even though it usually presents in the proximal muscles of the upper leg, it manifests itself in multiple muscle groups that include the muscles of the swallowing mechanisms...both oral, pharyngeal and esophageal. This would lead to dysphagia.
