What is Aerophagia? How Come I Don't Have It?

Aerophagia is , literally, the swallowing of air. It is most often caused by eating/drinking too fast, smoking, and wearing loose dentures. Common symptoms are frequent belching and abdomen distension. Contributing factors include GERD and overactive stomach acids.

Treatments for aerophagia are mainly behavioral and include refraining from drinking while eating, verbal/social reprimands, and holding one's nose. One study, performed on mentally handicapped individuals in the
80's, even used squirts of lemon juice in the mouth as a negative reinforcer.
