Look It Up

What is an empyema? Can you think of any impact this condition might have for speech pathology?

I looked up empyema...It is also known as pyothorax, and is a collection of pus within the pleural cavity. S/s include fever, chest pain, coughing, sweating, and shortness of breath. If a pt presents with empyema it would have an effect on breath support for voicing, so I would expect a weak voice, and fluency limited to short breath groups. Since the lung expansion would be inhibited, they may present with a weak cough in later stages, as they can't generate the pressure needed to forcefully blow apart the vocal folds.
